Child Protection

NMCS is actively involved in improving the child rights scenario in rural and peri urban areas.

The initiatives focusing on children living and working in the brick kilns forms an important section of its operations. High incidences of child labour, early marriage, physical abuse and sexual exploitation are common in the areas – which is perpetuated by lack of parental care. NMCS works towards creating child friendly environment by ensuring rights of education, health, water, sanitation and recreation among children and their parents through intervention of Govt. departments.

  • NMCS empowers parents in kilns and surrounding communities on basics of child right, protection and existing Govt. schemes, services and their entitlements.
  • Increases people’s participation in the well being of children by forming Child Protection Committees & Children’s groups .
  • Facilitates sensitization of duty bearers at District, State & National levels on issues related to children’s development.
  • Raises demands on behalf of children in government forums
  • Undertakes advocacy campaigns with Govt. authorities to ensure proper implementation of Govt. services.
  • Sensitizes brick kiln workers on different entitlements available for the unorganized/unskilled workers and encourages owners to support and adopt child friendly initiatives in their kilns.

These efforts have resulted in changing mind sets of owners and parents thereby reducing number of child labours in kilns. Many kilns have been declared child labour free, but the work needs to be expanded to cover many more kilns where deprivation and abuse are still everyday reality.
