The labour force working in the brick kilns are the major beneficiary group of these initiatives.  A sizable portion of such labourers belong to the community of seasonal migrant labourers who migrate to work in various kilns each year. Distress seasonal migration is a regular feature in various regions of India. Children accompany their parents – compromising their education, safety and childhood. Migrant labourers comprise the most vulnerable sections of society, and especially those that also belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe groups.

The dire situation on health and sanitation situation in the kilns reveal the lack of amenities for the community.  Absence of awareness among community on services as well as health and hygiene seeking behavior resulted in poor health status of women and children.  Water and sanitation infrastructure has been built in the kilns and adjoining schools to support the communities.

The lack of sanitation infrastructure leads to widespread environmental pollution in the kilns.  This coupled with inadequate healthcare and water sanitation facilities in the kilns results in poor health status of men women and children leading to huge medical expenses and also loss of man-days. Children are the worst sufferers of poor health and many suffer from malnutrition.

Along with its intervention on health, education and livelihood in the kilns, NMCS has focused on the WASH issues thorough the following activities:

  • Construction of toilet blocks and tube wells in kilns which are severely deficient of these facilities
  • Construction of infrastructure like toilet blocks and hand washing stations in schools near the kilns
  • Sensitizing communities on importance of waste management and conducting cleaning drives
  • Imparting hygiene education to communities
  • Conducting regular water quality monitoring through reputed laboratory
  • Sensitizing women and adolescent girls on the issue of menstrual hygiene management
  • Imparting hygiene education to school children through various innovative techniques
  • Sensitization of SHG members in charge  of  cooking and distributing mid day meal to school children on personal hygiene, food hygiene and water hygiene
  • Capacitating of teachers, ICDS and AWW workers on personal, food, water hygiene and menstrual hygiene so that they can further disseminate these knowledge among their students

In addition to hardware activities, through the intervention in the brick kilns, the organization has supported evolving of training and information dissemination strategies on the area of water sanitation and hygiene which have yielded excellent results in the form of involving the community and imparting training on usage and maintenance of the facilities constructed under the scope of its work.
